FAQs for training providers and employers seeking approval to offer the door supervision qualification.

I work for a company that trains door supervisors and I want to make sure that they will be eligible to apply for a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence.  What do I need to do?

Only companies and training providers approved by an SIA endorsed awarding body may offer the training that leads to the qualification that is needed before a door supervisor can apply for a license. A list of SIA endorsed awarding bodies is given on the SIA web site. Edexcel is an SIA endorsed awarding body.

If you wish to set up as an approved centre to offer the qualifications to your staff or trainees please read the information provided elsewhere on this micro-site regarding how to seek centre approval.

Why do I need to set up as an approved centre with Edexcel?

You must be approved by an SIA endorsed awarding body and apply for centre and qualification approval before you deliver the BTEC Award in Door Supervision. Approved centres are supplied with the information required to register candidates and run the tests.

How much does it cost to set up as an approved centre to offer the qualification?

Edexcel does not charge an approval fee but those organisations that do not meet a minimum threshold of 50 registrations in their first year of approval may be subject to an administration charge.

What are the requirements for approval?

You need to request the bespoke approval form from security@edexcel.org.uk.
and the guidance that accompanies the form. This lists the key requirements for prospective centres.
Additionally you need to check that you can meet the requirements laid out in the following documents:

  • The Guidance for Centres; BTEC Award in Door Supervision. This provides the syllabus and provides trainers with information on the course content. It also specifies the requirements for trainers delivering the SIA qualifications. (i.e. the experience and qualifications expected of trainers delivering the Part One (Unit One) and the Part Two (Unit Two) in communications and conflict management).
  • The BTEC Security Qualifications Centre Administration Pack which contains the guidance on how to conduct and run tests, how to register candidates, scan their image and signature and claim certificates.
  • Exemption from Training: The SIA has listed acceptable qualifications for exemption on their website. The guidance is also contained in the BTEC Security Qualifications Centre Administration Pack.

Is the qualification available now?

Yes, Edexcel was approved by the Qualification Curriculum Authority (QCA) to offer the qualification in May 2004  You may apply for approval for your training organisation to offer the qualification immediately.

How much will it cost for each door supervisor to take the qualification?

The registration fee for each candidate is £39.50 +VAT (valid to August 31st 2006). This includes the cost of the tests, certification and an annual audit visit.  If a door supervisor is exempt from the Part One, they only pay for registration and the test for the Part Two for which the fee is £22.00 = VAT.  Candidates failing a test are charged a marking fee of £10 + VAT.  A full list of fees is contained in the BTEC Security Qualifications Centre Administration Pack.

How long is the training?

The qualification requires 28 hours of training delivery + 2 hours for the tests.

What will the qualification look like?

The qualification is in two parts or units. The first unit contains the knowledge you need to be a door supervisor and the second looks at building the skills and knowledge you require to manage conflict. The qualification is examined by two multiple choice tests. The trainee door supervisor must pass both the tests to achieve the qualification.

What else is available to help me plan ahead?

The Guidance to Centres; BTEC Award in Door Supervision.
This is the specification that lays out the training objectives and content of the qualification. The Guidance to Centres for each qualification are available in downloadable pdf. format from the main Edexcel website or follow links from  this micro site. Published copies may be purchased from our publications department.

Will you be holding any events or workshops to help us prepare to offer the qualification?

Edexcel runs regional staff development events throughout England and Wales in many aspects of qualification provision. In particular for security qualifications we run workshops for administrators. See the events section of this micro site. http://security.edexcel.org.uk/home/events/

We have also established the BTEC Security Training Forum. This is open to training providers and employers offering the qualifications for SIA licensing. It is a network group that meets three times a year. Please see details in the events section of this micro site.

How will door supervisors contacting Edexcel find out about our training offer?

You need to let us know in which towns you run training courses (one per county). Edexcel informs the SIA of our approved providers on a fortnightly basis and the SIA then list them on their website in the Get Training section.

 http://www.the-sia.org.uk/home/licensing/door_supervision/training/training_ds_providers.htm

Where can my trainers access the training required to be eligible to deliver the conflict management unit?

It is an SIA requirement that by August 1st 2006 trainers delivering the conflict management units contained in the qualifications developed in support of SIA licensing are appropriately qualified. You should read the document Guidance to Centres; BTEC Award in Door Supervision. A list of centres approved to offer the Edexcel level 3 BTEC Award in the Delivery of Conflict Management Training is available upon request to security@edexcel.org.uk

Many of our door supervisors already hold a license do they still need to attend the training?

Please consult the SIA web site for the latest list of exemptions. In most cases the door supervisor will still need to take the tests and therefore you will still need to pay the appropriate fee to the awarding body. A full fee list is available upon request from security@edexcel.org.uk

Is there any public funding available to finance training costs?

The Learning and Skills Council National Office had made funding available  prior to April 2005. This is no longer available.

I still have more questions who should I speak to?

Please email your question to security@edexcel.org.uk or telephone our call centre on.

I am a trainer delivering scenario-based conflict management training for the SIA approved qualifications what qualification must I hold and when is the deadline for achieving it?

As you will be aware the SIA requires all trainers delivering scenario-based conflict management training for the SIA approved qualifications to have received relevant training. The deadline for trainers to achieve a conflict management trainers qualification (such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Award in The Delivery of Conflict Management Training) has changed from 1st January 2006 to 1st August 2006. Edexcel auditors will require to see evidence that trainers have plans in place to achieve the qualification by the new deadline. Suitable evidence will include an enrolment letter from the training provider or an awarding body candidate registration number.

Am I exempt if I hold the BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Licensees (NCL)?

The SIA has agreed an additional exemption from the training of Part One of the SIA door supervision competency requirement against the BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Licensees (NCL). Those learners who have passed the BIIAB Level 2 NCL will be exempt from attending the two days of training for Unit One.

Additionally the following conditions must be met:

1. The training provider offers revision opportunities to each learner

2. Candidates pass the BTEC Test for Unit One of the BTEC Award in Door Supervision or have passed an equivalent independently verifiable assessment

3. Candidates complete the door supervisor training and assessment for Unit 2 (Part Two).

The exemption will not apply to the BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH).

The qualifications that we offer as a training provider will be reaching the end of their three year accreditation period what is the SIA and the awarding bodies doing about updating the core competency specifications?

You are advised to look at the SIA Competency Renewal Strategy available on the SIA website see link http://www.the-sia.org.uk/home/training/renewal.htm
