Who is Edexcel?

Edexcel is a leading awarding body offering both vocational and academic qualifications in the UK and internationally. Around the world 2 million learners studied for our qualifications last year. We are owned by the publishing group Pearson plc. For more information go to the edexcel home page www.edexcel.org.uk.

How does Edexcel work with the Security Industry Authority (SIA)?

Edexcel is endorsed by the SIA to provide qualifications to support the licensing of security operatives.  We work closely with the Competency Team at the SIA during the development of the core competency specifications and then develop a qualification to meet these specifications. Once a learner has achieved the qualification we are responsible for uploading their details to the SIA Qualification Database. The SIA makes reference to this during the licence application process so that the SIA is able to check that a learner is appropriately trained and qualified.

How can our organisation work with Edexcel to access the qualifications our staff will need before applying for an SIA licence?

We welcome contact with employer organisations or training providers who are interested in our qualifications. Lists of our approved training providers are available on the SIA website http://www.the-sia.org.uk/home

Alternatively if you intend to seek approval with us to offer the qualifications to your staff or trainees you should complete the Expression of Interest Form and send it to security@edexcel.org.uk. We will then contact you and send the approval forms.

How much does it cost to set up as an Edexcel approved centre to offer the BTEC qualifications?

Edexcel does not charge an approval fee but those organisations that do not meet a minimum threshold of 50 registrations in their first year of approval may be subject to an administration charge. Further information on the approval process is found in another part of this site.

What do the BTEC Qualifications developed in support of SIA licensing comprise?

The first four qualifications developed to support the SIA licensing progress are:
BTEC Award in Door Supervision
BTEC Award in Vehicle Immobilisation
BTEC Award in Security Operations
BTEC Award in CCTV Operation (Public Space Surveillance)

Each qualification is at level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework, contains 30 hours of learning and comprises 2 units. Units are tested by a one hour multiple choice test.  Additionally the CCTV qualification contains a practical skills assessment.

The BTEC Certificate in Close Protection Operations is at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework, contains150 hours of learning and comprises 5 units.  It is tested by a 90 minute multiple choice test and a practical skills assessment.

Some learners who have evidence of prior accredited training or qualifications may be exempt from all or part of the delivered training and assessment. You are advised to consult the SIA website for the exemptions specific to each qualification.

What and are the different roles and responsibilities of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and Skills for Security?

A Memorandum of Understanding between the SIA and Skills for Security has now been finalised and published on the SIA website
